Germany’s candidacy for a seat on the Security Council in 2019/20

Germany is seeking to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Foreign Minister Steinmeier announced the candidacy for 2019/20 in Hamburg on Monday (27 June). The elections are expected to take place at the General Assembly in June 2018.

Omani-German Visa Agreement - Clarification

Referring to recent reports in the press on the Omani-German Visa Agreement signed on 8 March 2016  the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany wishes to clarify:

1. The Agreement applies only to diplomatic, service and special passports.

2. Regular passport holders will still need a Schengen-Visa to travel to Germany.

3. The Agreement has not yet entered into force as the ratification process is ongoing.  

In view of the upcoming holiday season it is advised to book an appointment well in advance of the date of travel.

On 1 January 2016 Germany has assumed the Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co‑operation in Europe (OSCE) and is therefore be responsible for steering the Organization safely through the stormy tides of crises and challenges in 2016. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has presented the details of the Chairmanship’s programme to the 57 OSCE participating States in Vienna on 14 January 2016.
